Twenty-five Friends of Rachel club members from the high school traveled to the elementary school as advocates of acts of kindness, hope and positive role models. Each classroom at every grade level was visited by small groups of students who had prepared developmentally appropriate activities to engage the elementary students understanding the core message of Rachel’s Challenge: Look for the best in others; Dream big; Choose positive influences; Speak with kindness; Start a chain reaction
At the end of the presentation each class received blue and gold paper cut into strips to be assembled into chains for each student in the class. The students were told that they could receive a chain link each time they engaged in an act of kindness – blue links for at school and gold links for at home.
This was an incredibly rewarding experience for all the students, and the Friends of Rachel are hoping to continue to act as ambassadors to the elementary where they hope to help cultivate a thriving culture and community of caring and kindness. We are very proud of them. Below are some pictures from the event.
Cadences for the Cure
Under the encouragement of senior bandsmen, Amanda Payne, Wickliffe Percussion section was offered the opportunity to participate in the Komen Race for the Cure. So early Saturday morning, September 15, 2012, twelve students representing the Wickliffe Percussion section traveled to downtown Cleveland to support those running, jogging and walking in the Komen Race for the Cure.
Once the race was underway percussionists: Domenic Formica, Courtney Kaleal, Cortez Grayson, Jeremy Scheid, Megan Ayers, Andrew McChesney, Nicholas Ruffino, Alec Bortnick, Jacob Henkin, Brian Chenock, Jacob Skiba, Enzo Baffa, started playing cadences non-stop. When participants passed the WHS percussionist, they thanked them, applauded, danced and some even stopped and took their pictures. Our students gave the runners, walkers, and joggers that extra encouragement and support.
